Mañana te Cuento (Laguna Productions)
In general, when you think about teen-related movies - especially those involving sex, drugs, booze and rock & roll –, the ones that come to mind are generated by the Hollywood factory, like "Porky’s" and its sequels, "American Graffiti," "American Pie" and it sequels, and numerous more. It never occurred to me that those types of films were, in addition to Mexico — which dominates the USA market –, also made in other Latin American countries. It was, of course, a surprise when I saw the vibrant and sincere "Mañana te cuento," a drama with some sparks of comedy, made in Perú.
Manuel (Bruno Ascenzo), Efraín (Oscar Beltrán), El Gordo ("Fatty") (José Manuel Peláez) - there’s always a fat one –, and Juan Diego (Jason Day) are good friends, who share many a night of fun. In one particular night, in which they were truly bored and without anything else to do, they decided to hire the services of some prostitutes. After some painful negotiations and budget considerations, they can only afford the services of three, very attractive ladies (Angie Jibaja, Melania Urbina, Milene Vásquez), which means, of course, that one of them (yes, you guessed right: El Gordo) will go without the ladies’ services.
Because of the inexperience of some of the boys in regards to dealing with women, the night turns out to be longer that expected, which helps Manuel, Efrain, and Juan Diego to get to know the women a little bit better - each one in a different room –, with El Gordo walking throughout the house, fighting boredom. But, with all this time to kill, and because the ladies were hired until five in the morning, their conversations turn out to be interesting and very revealing, exposing some secrets for both the women and the teenagers. These secrets will affect the future of all involved, as well as the inseparable friends’ future.
This film in some way reminded me about my younger years, and I know it will do the same for some of you. This is especially true with the scenes in which the boys are cruising the city at night, looking for fun and trouble. (Perú, 2005, color, 100 min.)
